This has been quite the week as far as inappropriate behaviour and abuse allegations go!
Hopefully, we’ll have some more positive and uplifting news next week, but for the time being, we have to address the latest Hollywood abuse allegations; this time involving Sarah Michelle Gellar and Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator, Joss Whedon.
Earlier this week, Charisma Carpenter – who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy The Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 1999 before moving onto the show’s spin-off, Angel, until 2004 – made several allegations about Joss Whedon’s “inappropriate” and “cruel” behavior in a tell-all statement entitled “My Truth”, which she posted to Twitter yesterday.
The statement came following Ray Fisher’s allegations against the director, which he first made last year, regarding their work on Justice League back in 2017. He called his behavior “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” which very much echoes Charisma’s allegations…
“He has created hostile and toxic work environments since his early career. I know because I experienced it first-hand. Repeatedly,” Charisma Carpenter wrote in her long and emotional statement against Joss Whedon.
“He was mean and biting, disparaging about others openly, and often played favorites, pitting people against one another to compete and vie for his attention and approval,” the 50-year-old actress continued, before detailing how he responded to the news that she was pregnant while filming Angel…
“He asked me if I was going to ‘keep it’ and manipulatively weaponized my womanhood and faith against me,” she added.
“He proceeded to attack my character, mock my religious beliefs, accuse me of sabotaging the show, and then unceremoniously fired me the following season once I gave birth.”
Amber Benson, who played the role of Tara Maclay on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, made her support of Charisma Carpenter very clear…
“It was a toxic environment and it starts at the top,” she began.
“@AllCharisma is speaking truth and I support her 100 per cent.
“There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later.”
We, like most fans, were most intrigued to find out what the leading lady and vampire slayer herself thought of the allegations…
Although Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t go into any detail about her own experiences, she did commend both Charisma Carpenter and Amber Benson for speaking up. Take from this what you will…
“While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon,” Buffy Summers star Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote on Instagram.
“I am more focused on raising my family and surviving a pandemic currently, so I will not be making any further statements at this time,” the 43-year-old continued.
“But I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out.”
Has her statement – or lack thereof – given us the answers we wanted? Perhaps… but it was Michelle Trachtenberg, who played the role of Buffy’s younger sister Dawn Summers, who gave us more insight into how some members of the cast feel about the allegations…
“Thank you @sarahmgellar for saying this,” she wrote, as a comment to SMG’s social media post.
“I am brave enough now as a 35-year-old woman to repost this. Because this must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior. Very. Not. Appropriate.”
She didn’t end things there, as she also took to her Instagram Story to say that “we know what he did behind the scenes.”
Joss Whedon has yet to respond to these allegations, but we’re waiting with open ears.
